Echocardiography at Home
A home echocardiogram with professional interpretation by a cardiologist.

Is every echocardiogram suitable to be done at home?
Not every type of test and not every clinical situation is suitable for testing at home. Before scheduling, the type of test requested, the referral and the relevant medical information are checked. When a test or a setting is needed that is not suitable for the home service, the investigation should be carried out in the appropriate medical setting.
What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a non-invasive ultrasound examination that produces images of the structure and function of the heart. A clinician decides whether the examination is appropriate for the patient.
How the home examination is performed
A trained professional performs the examination at home using mobile ultrasound equipment. Gel is applied to the chest and a transducer is moved over the skin to obtain the required images.
Preparation and results
Special preparation is not usually required, but relevant medical information and medication details may be requested in advance. The images are sent to a qualified cardiologist for interpretation, and further care is determined by the treating physician.

Frequently asked questions
Is an echocardiogram at home different from one at an imaging institute?
The principle of the test is the same: ultrasound is used to image the heart. The home service allows the test to be performed at home using a suitable portable ultrasound system.
Is there radiation in an echocardiogram?
No. An echocardiogram is based on ultrasound waves and does not use ionising radiation.
Is special preparation needed before an echocardiogram?
A standard echocardiogram usually does not require complex preparation. If there are special instructions for a particular case, they will be given before the test.
How long does an echocardiogram at home take?
The length of the test can vary depending on the patient and the findings required, so there is no single duration for every test.
Is an echocardiogram at home suitable for housebound patients?
Yes. The service can be particularly suitable for patients who have difficulty getting to an imaging institute or clinic, subject to the test being suitable.
Do I receive a written report after the test?
Yes. Depending on the service pathway, the test is sent for interpretation and a professional report is issued.
Can the result be sent to my treating physician?
The report can be used for continued care and passed on to the treating physician in accordance with the service pathway and the rules for transferring medical information.
Can I book an echocardiogram privately?
Yes. Care Plus also offers echocardiography at home as a private service, subject to availability and the service area.
